October Students of the Month
The Spearfish Optimists Students of the Month for October are from left: Rigel Roberdeau, Taylor Hersch, and Thomas Friedrich.
Rigel is actively involved in soccer, cross country, track and field, band and constitutional government. He is on the A Honor Roll, multi-letter winner in soccer, cross country, track and field and band. He enjoys archery hunting, alpine climbing, bass fishing and drawing. After high school he plans to attend college and is interested in writing, engineering, intelligence agencies and aviation.
Taylor is involved in Key Club, Knowledge Bowl, National Honors Society, Student Council, extreme ironing, and speech and debate. Taylor is on the A Honor Roll and has received her academic and band letter. She is a two-time state debate champion, student of the month and attended Girls State. Taylor enjoys trivia and softball. After high school Taylor plans to attend Vanderbilt and earn a degree for marketing and business.
Thomas is involved in speech and debate, Knowledge Bowl, band, Student Council, National Honors Society and Students for Christ. He has been recognized as a National Debate All American, State Champion Public Forum Debate, and is a NSLI-Y Scholarship recipient. Thomas enjoys hiking, reading, Civil Air Patrol and foreign languages. After high school he plans to major in linguistics and pursue a career in virology or law.
September Students of the Month
The September Students of the Month are pictured, from left: Jay Sayler, Kayla Jarvis, Sophia Caldwell.
Jay is involved in soccer, tennis, drama, speech, Student Council, band, SD Democrats and the National Honor Society. He enjoys backpacking, traveling and skiing. Jay plans to attend college after high school.
Kayla participates in volleyball, tutoring and AAU Volleyball. She has lettered in volleyball and academics for three years. She is involved in the national High School Honor Society and has been listed on the A-Honor Roll for three years. She enjoys reading, volleyball, drawing and painting. After high school, Kayla plans to attend the School of Mines and earn her applied biological sciences degree. She would like to pursue a career as a disease researcher or medical scientist.
Sophia is involved in softball, Student Council, Shelter Pets, Key Club and National Honors Society. She has received her academic and band letter. She enjoys softball and baking. After high school, Sophia plans to attend Wartburg College of UMass Dartmouth and pursue a career in architectural, civil or chemical engineering.
